Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage is a calming, restorative treatment that helps ease tension in the shoulders, neck, jaw and head. Using traditional Indian techniques, it supports your nervous system to move from stress and “fight or flight” into a state of rest and balance, promoting a deep sense of wellbeing.

The treatment is carried out while you sit comfortably in a chair and remain fully dressed, making it an easy and grounding way to unwind without the need for a full-body massage.

How can Indian Head Massage help?

  • Calms and soothes the nervous system
  • Eases tightness in the neck, shoulders and jaw (including TMJ tension)
  • Aims to relieve headaches, eyestrain and sinus congestion
  • Supports healthy circulation and lymph flow
  • Encourages relaxation, clarity and emotional balance

What To Expect

If it’s your first session with me, there’ll be a short form to complete, followed by a health and wellbeing consultation to discuss your needs and reasons for coming.

If it’s a follow up session, we have a short catch up on how you’re feeling and any changes you’ve had.

You’ll be seated in a chair with a pillow for support and a blanket to keep you warm and comfortable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Indian Head Massage help me?

Everyone is different, so it’s impossible to say if Indian Head massage will help you. The only way to know is if you give it a try!

What should I wear for the session?

You’ll be seated on a chair for the session, and you remain fully clothed. However, it’s much easier for me to work over a light t-shirt or shirt – smooth material lends itself better to the techniques, rather than a heavier jumper, sweater or hoodie. It’s great to wear something that allows me to work on your neck easily too.

Do you use any oils in the session?

Traditionally, oils are used on the head and scalp during an Indian head massage to promote scalp and hair health. I don’t tend to use them but if you are keen to have this, please do let me know in advance and I’d be happy to include them in your session.

How many sessions should I have?

This is very individual and depends why you’re coming. Some people like to have a session every few weeks as a way to help stay relaxed and manage stress, others might need more frequent sessions if they are experiencing a lot of tension or stress. If you’re interested in further sessions, we can chat about what might suit you in your session. You can save some money if you buy a course of six sessions; you can find details of that on my Prices page.

How will I feel afterwards?

Some people feel energised, some people feel very relaxed. It really depends on how you’re feeling on the day and what kind of tension you hold. As with all types of massage, it’s best to stay hydrated following your session and take it as easy as possible – try not to do anything too strenuous afterwards if possible!

Can I claim back my treatment on my health insurance?

If you have health insurance that covers Indian Head massage treatments, then yes. I am a member of the Association of Reflexologist and a member of the Federation of Holistic Therapists, and am fully insured with Alan Boswell. Many of my clients are able to claim their sessions back.
