What is nervous system regulation?

You may have heard the term nervous system regulation, and it’s something I often talk about with my work. But what is it, and why does it matter?

Put super simply, it is the way our nervous system responds to our environment – the way it ebbs and flows in response to challenge, and how it returns to a relaxed baseline.

When something feels challenging in our lives, the ‘stress response’ is activated—often called “fight or flight”—and this helps us focus, react, and cope with the situation.  When this challenge subsides, our nervous system can return back to a place of calm and balance – the 'relaxation response'.

This ebb and flow, moving from stress response to relaxation response, is what we refer to as nervous system regulation.

Sometimes though, when stress is ongoing and we don’t have enough opportunity to recover, the nervous system may get stuck in a more activated state.  This activated state is called dysregulation, and over time, frequent dysregulation can contribute to what we experience as chronic stress.

Chronic stress impacts more than just our emotions and mental wellbeing, it can also have a big impact on physical health.  Symptoms of chronic stress might start to affect the systems in our bodies responsible for day to day functioning – digestion, immunity, fertility or cardiovascular health. We might develop symptoms like IBS, high blood pressure or struggle to recover from viruses.  When you’re stuck for a long time in a stress response, it can be hard to return to a relaxed state.  Sometimes you can't quite remember what relaxation feels like.

This is where body-based approaches can be really supportive. Research suggests that hands-on therapies like massage can support the “rest and digest” part of the nervous system, helping to slow the heart rate, reduce stress hormones like cortisol, and gently guide the body back towards balance.  Bodywork begins with the body—sending signals of safety that help the brain and nervous system settle.

The good news is that the nervous system is adaptable and always responding to change. With the right kind of support—whether that’s rest, connection, movement, or bodywork—it can gradually shift back towards a calmer, more regulated state.

This is the intention behind the sessions I offer. Through Reflexology, Indian Head Massage, and Facial Massage Therapies, I support your body to soften, slow down, and settle—creating the conditions for your nervous system to unwind and rebalance.
